What Exactly Does The Term Web 2.0 Mean?

For many people the term Web 2.0 is complicated. They fail truly to understand what this is and how it works. Many so-called experts have tried to give their long drawn out technical explanation of this type of web site. The problem is though is that use so much jargon and hard to understand technical mumbo jumbo that an average person will need a Rosetta stone to decipher what these experts are saying.

One of the definitions that I came across when I first started looking into Web 2.0 was that is was a term to characterize design patterns in what they called a constellation of a new generation of web applications. They went on to speak of infrastructures and new and improved collaborations. The further I read on the more confused I became. The only thing that I was able to gather from what the writer of that page was talking about was that; Web 2.0 was a phrase coined by O’Reilly Media in 2004. Understanding who coined the phrase was not going to help me to understand how this new generation of web applications was going to benefit me.

The only way I figured I was going to learn what this was all about was to jump in headfirst and start using these sites to my advantage. With no real understanding of these sites true purpose and the workings of the sites, I was leery for some time. After utilizing different variations of Web 2.0 sites, I have now figured out what this is all about, once you remove the confusing tech talk. Is it not about time though for the average person to understand what this concept is? Well hold on because I am getting ready to explain this concept to you in easy to understand plain English.

Web 2.0 websites are user generated content sites. Visitors to the sites sign up and then start contributing their own content to the site. MySpace is a user generated Web 2.0 social networking site. Users create their own profiles, add pictures, and upload videos and even music to the site. Social bookmarking sites such as Digg allow users to submit links to stories, videos and website that they like along with their own review of the pictures, videos and websites in general. Thus, the majority or whole content of these sites is that of contributions from users just like you.

The way this concept differs from what we know as traditional sites or Web 1.0 sites that the traditional sites are sites that are more static. In this, the webmaster generates all the content for the site and shares this content with you. You have no say in the content that is on this site nor do you usually have a chance to leave your own opinion of what you have seen on the site. Now some traditional sites do have areas for comments but this should not be confused with the broad user generated content sharing of a Web 2.0 website.

Take the blog site Tblog.com for example; this site is a Web 2.0 blog that is comprised of thousands of users creating individual blogs on a variety of subjects. All the information that you find on this site is all user contributed. The same concept applies with YouTube, which has tons of videos that you can watch. All of these videos are all user contributed to add a lot of diverse content to the website.

Now you can see in plain English a simpler explanation of what a Web 2.0 site is. Once you take all the technical talk and industry jargon out of the equation, it starts really to make sense. User generated content sites means marketing potential for you. One of the rewards of Web 2.0 marketing is that it is virtually free to use.

You just how to know how to successfully utilize these sites and that is what you will learn how to do. After all, I have already been down that road and went through my trial and errors on what marketing with Web 2.0 sites can and cannot do for you and your business.

Right now Facebook is one of the most popular websites on the internet, with a staggering 1 in 5 internet users being members. So if you are going to start anywhere, that’s the place to be.

6 Steps of an Easy Article Marketing Strategy

The article marketing strategy is HOT right now and is bringing in a ton of traffic for FREE. But there is a strategy to it that is beyond simply writing a piece of content for your blog or site and then letting it sit, hoping someone will, someday, look at it. One of the best things about article marketing is that there is room for anyone who wants to work at it without the internet becoming “oversaturated”.

I’m going to give you a guide to the article marketing strategy based on company reviews that will reach a ton of people very easily.

1. Find a Company – If you don’t have a company in mind, run over to Npros.com. Npros has a directory of home-based businesses and features new businesses! So choose a company from the list and we’ll go on…

2. Pick Your Keyword – It is essential to take a few minutes and do some research to pick a good keyword before you start. I suggest using the Google Keyword Tool. Just enter a keyword or phrase and the tool will provide you information on the number of monthly searched performed for that word or phrase. I would choose a keyword or phrase that is searched over 1,ooo times per month. The tool also gives you an idea of the size of your competition. So the best choice is a keyword that has a high-frequency search rate but a low competition. Don’t worry, it can be done!

3. Do the Research – So, you now have your company and keyword. The next thing you need to do is Google them and do a bit of research. Take a few notes for your article. This process can take as little as 10 minutes.

4. Get to Writing – Use your own words and write a valuable article. Keep the article relatively short (250-450 words) because people have short attention spans and don’t like reading books when all they want are quick answers. Your keyword should go in the article’s title and in each paragraph or every 100 words or so. Try not to use it too much as Google penalizes it.

5. Be Sure to Use the Resource Box – The resource box is an article sharing site’s way of rewarding you for providing good content. In your resource box, you are able to write about yourself and provide links. I don’t recommend just putting your name and your website, but be creative. Make the resource box a continuation of the article by offering further information that can be found on your blog, capture page, etc. Entice the reader to follow through and visit your site. This is your chance to brank yourself as an expert.

6. Submit Your Article -I recommend using already established content-sharing websites. I have provided a few suggestions below, but there are literally hundreds of them out there. I like to use EzineArticles first, because Google loves this site.

* EzineArticles
* GoArticles
* Articles Dashboard
* Idea Marketers
* Article Alley

Using an article marketing strategy is a great way to get free traffic on your pages and sites, and it’s really not difficult to do. Have fun with it and start getting those results!

The Myth of "Flawless Execution"

I love being flawless. It puts a big smile on my face. Whether giving a speech, making a cold call, or bluffing at poker, it’s nice to have a perfect mission.

Ok…let’s get real here…it almost NEVER happens!!

So many companies have a mission of ‘flawless execution’ for their employees. They wear it like a badge of honor and preach it at their annual sales meetings and in their company newsletters. They think that pushing for perfection really works. I disagree.

I have a question for you. Are you flawless in your sales processes? Do you never make mistakes?

No fighter pilot mission is ever complete until we de-brief. Why? Because 99.9% of the time, mistakes are made and we need to figure out how not to make them again! No mission is ever perfect, regardless if you’re a fighter pilot, sales manager, or an IT specialist. We’re all human beings, and human beings make mistakes.

The problem with having a flawless execution business philosophy is that it often back-fires. Here’s why – When people are pushed to be perfect, they stop taking risks and start accepting mediocrity! They become afraid to push the envelope and make mistakes. After all, if they don’t perform flawlessly, they must be messing up! In essence, they become fearful…and fear takes away our winning spirit. In an age where innovation and risk taking are so critical to business growth, that type of behavior can prove fatal.

Here’s another question – Do you want to operate in an environment that promotes mediocrity? I didn’t think so. Nobody wants to be a mediocre sales person. Don’t sell out to the myth of being flawless.

My friend Jeffrey Gitomer is one of the top sales trainers in the world. He actually pays his employees when they make a mistake! That’s right. When they use their best judgment and make a decision that they feel is in the best interest of his company, they get paid. WOW! Talk about motivating your employees to take risks.

The best fighter pilots are the ones who have made all the mistakes in the book. But they took action to correct them so they wouldn’t happen again. In sales, this is also the key to success. You have to push the envelope – try a new sales tactic, abort a weak prospect, fly out to see a client out of the blue. Dare to be different and test the waters.

Here’s a Wingtip. Rather than demand flawless execution, command flawless preparation! (You command it through your words and actions (i.e. your example). Now that’s something that is attainable. Discipline yourself to:

* Extensively study your prospects and competition
* Mission rehearse (chair-fly) every sales call or product demo
* Plan for contingencies (the ‘what-ifs’ of business)
* Attend seminars to strengthen your personal development or business skills
* Build trusting relationships with wingmen you can turn to for help

The list goes on and on. Bottom line – take the focus off of the flawless execution of your sales missions and focus on the flawless preparation that will eventually lead to flawless (or near flawless) execution.

That’s how you win.

PUSH IT UP!!

Encourage Teamwork At Work

People are hired by businesses to accomplish goals and objectives in the work environment. Often, people and even other businesses collaborate through team attitudes to achieve a predetermined desired outcome. Supporting team players is vital to reaching those goals and objectives. Ideally, a concise statement or purpose will help ensure everyone knows what that goal is. The need to support team environments depends on the duration the business needs to employ a group to meet an objective. That goal or set of goals must be distinctly defined so that each person has direction, thereby creating direction for the entire group and increasing the likelihood of quickly, yet efficiently, achieving the desired goal.

In order for the team to work together well and meet the expectations and goals of the project, they must trust each other. Notice that this does not say members must like each other, but they must trust one another. This means that each member must believe in the character and abilities of the others. A company that fosters an open, empowering, and honest work environment is more likely to be able to build successful teams rather than a company that ignores moral issues within the organization.

Leadership is a primary component within a functioning team. Effective leaders will be able to bring a group to its conscientious and achieve goals simply through being a role model. In other words, they will know how to win the thoughts of the group members by doing tasks they request themselves so they can reach the team’s ultimate objective. A leader that is not so effective will not show motivational skills.

People in groups can sometimes become reluctant to work alongside other individuals because they may have differences. Knowing how to handle this is absolutely necessary. Understanding this kind of problem usually arises within the team is the first step to finding a way to solve it. A valuable leader will have the skill of insight and be able to guide individuals with these kinds of issues towards a reasonable solution. The leader must hold steadfast to the idea that although we may not all particularly like each other, in the workplace we have a goal and that goal is most important.

The promotion of team players must happen often. Think of a sports team and imagine the coach positively reinforcing when each member helps another. And when you support ethical behavior, moral judgments and solid interactions you will automatically promote team playing. Actually, this can all be accomplished during employee breaks or a structured meeting.

Why Aren’t My Training Programs Working?

The class on improving time management looked as if it would be a smart idea at first. You had every employee attend, and now months down the line schedule slippages are worse than ever. What is the problem? Could it be because your concept of how training works is outdated? According to this oversimplified view, training works like a magic potion. With this uncomplicated perspective, by attending training classes, desirable results for your company will come about automatically. Similarly, on this view, by enrolling workers in an online class and giving them access to computers for learning, it is thought that you will see gains in your workplace.

How training leads to a great business outcome on this view can be shown like this:

Trainee Attendance >> Business Results

The arrows show this idea of how an employee attending a well-designed and implemented training event creates the improved business results. Some possible outcomes for the business could be less time for a product or service to make it to market, a decrease in customer complaints, or an increase in customer loyalty, to name a few examples.

This is your preferred perspective if you view training as primarily telling workers “what and how.” Managers that behave from this viewpoint are mainly concerned with the “content” of the program. As they choose a program, they concentrate solely on the information that their workers will be provided.

You can compare this approach to seeing your trainees as pieces of hardware or robots. With this approach, training people works the same way as with programming a machine: an employee is led to the programming area, the brand new instructions are “programmed” for the employee, and the employee then returns to their task at hand.

You may not even realize that you view your employees as machinery, waiting to be instructed. One method of determining whether you view trainees as robots is to observe how you react when employees don’t behave according to the instructions they received in the training. If training doesn’t work, do you train the same employees the same way, hoping that things will be different this time? And do you write off the employees as “un-trainable” and ignore them when the second training session fails?

Now let me move your attention to a more influential aspect of how training works. As the basic view is linear and one-dimensional, this more advanced view of training centers around the concept that there are a lot of items that interact with the training event, that either bring about or prevent the intended company benefits.

Briefly stated, you can summarize this more sophisticated view as follows:

Trainee Attendance >> Trainee Learning >> Workplace Behavior >> Business Results

Note that with this view, there are a greater number of steps along the way, beginning with training program attendance, to attaining the desired business results. Additional steps mean there is a greater chance for training to fail even beyond the trainee’s own shortcomings.

Let’s consider these additional steps. After learning the material at the training event, it is even more important for the trainee to actually apply the new knowledge and skills. In order for this to happen, the training program must be well thought out and handled properly. Complete agreement as well as a clear statement must be made about the business and learning goals. The program should allow the trainees many chances to practice, gain helpful feedback, etc. Acknowledge that there is no guarantee with the learning. If results are what you desire, make sure that only professionals are involved in putting together and delivering the program.

First and foremost, you should observe that this step entails mitigating factors that go into determining how much your workers will learn. The trainee’s ability and motivation are some of the factors. Playing the employees’ manager part is very important. You have to be sure that only those with the proper credentials attend the training session. Furthermore, you will need to perform a few tasks prior to and throughout the training to make certain that your employees are motivated and remain enthusiastic to be trained.

Next, the trainee is able to put into practice the knowledge they have gained. Training will fall short if attendees don’t modify their behavior beneficially when they are back at work. There are several things that can lessen or increase learning. Your role as a manager is very important in this case. The highest priority for you is to make certain that back on the job, your employees have plenty of opportunities to implement their new skills. Where you’ve made these opportunities available, you’ll need to ensure that a coach is accessible to them who will help them get past the initial difficulties they encounter and that you give ample feedback concerning their performance.

Additional tasks you will need to perform are: setting goals that are mutually agreed upon, defining job responsibilities and rewarding employees who do things correctly and accomplish results. As none of these critical elements are automatic, work diligently with the trainer as well as your employees to make certain that the trainees have the correct work environment to utilize their new skills.

The final step will include turning the new behaviors into wanted business results. You might assume that since your workers finished the training and implemented it at work, this final step is a given. This is not the case. Other things might prevent or lessen the results you want. For instance, there may not be a decrease in customer complaints following the training of customer service personnel due to the recent release of a highly defective new product by your product department. Looking at the bigger picture could be crucial too. For example, when tariffs are simultaneously lowered by the government, the desired increase in sales may not come to fruition.

The worst thing that can happen is that you find out the training program was not the right answer to start with. While it is possible to train individuals to perform quality inspection, it is far less costly and time consuming to prevent the defects than inspect to find them. So, work in close collaboration with the training program designers from the outset to ensure that the training program you come up with really will solve your problem.

The more powerful view of training, as you can discern, scrutinizes the aspects that can either bar or greatly lower the great business results you wanted. This way of looking at things serves to make you focus on each of the important steps required to achieve results in your business, rather than employees simply attending the training program. One key thing to take from adopting this view of how training works is that, as a manager, you will need to partner with your employees and the people who design and roll out the training if you want your program to have any chance at success.

There is a lot more that can be said about how the promotion of this partnership can take advantage of proper factors at each step to form more useful training programs. I have achieved my objective if you can go on from here and understand that your success as a manager depends on your choosing the right view of how training works.

Boost your business with employee training

If you want to improve staff retention, increase productivity, and improve morale then you may want to consider employee training. It is important for a number of reasons that your members of staff remain up-to-date, and I will discuss some of these below.

Employee training improves staff retention

If staff feel that they are stagnant and not challenged then they are more likely to lose interest in their work. This boredom will cause many to look for another job that seems a bit more challenging. Employee training keeps things fresh, and it makes the staff feel like they are developing while in the job. So long as they feel they are learning something new and needing to meet new challenges their attitude to the job will remain fresh and enthusiastic. It is when members of staff feel that there is nothing more to learn that problems set in.

Employee training improves productivity

In every industry there will always innovations and improved ways of doing things. Employee training will keep people up-to-date and consequently more productive. The fact that they are not bored with their job will also mean that they will work a lot harder.

Employee training improves staff morale

When you provide employee training it demonstrates to staff that you view them as important for the company’s future. It is given them the message that their contribution is needed by the company; in fact it is so important that you are willing to invest in their education. When employees feel valued like this it increases staff morale. It also adds to their productivity and makes them less likely to leave the job.

Employee training is good for team building

When staff members are brought together in an environment like employee training it increases their sense of being a team. These sessions tend to mix people who work in different parts of the business together. This will allow them to better understand how the other parts of the business work and how everyone is in it together for a similar purpose. These training sessions allows for a bit of socializing as well as learning. It also gives the managers a chance to mingle with staff in a more relaxed manner.

Employee training ensures that everyone is up to date on policy and procedures

There will be some types of employee training that are mandatory in certain industries. Things such as manual handling, CPR, first aid, and so on. These training sessions will most often be required for each staff member every few years. It is important that you try and have everyone on the same training schedule so that you don’t have to provide many sessions of the same class. If there are new procedures that you want staff to follow then these training sessions are the best time to introduce these.

As you can see there are many benefits available by having training for staff. It is a good idea to aim to have so many of these every year. If your business is constantly changing or involves a lot of on the job learning then monthly training sessions might be a good idea.

Creating a synthesis of different leadership development approaches

What would be the product of a synthesis of different leadership approaches? Would it give out something like an essence of what it means to be a leader or maybe it would be nothing but meaningless babble, another futile attempt at making sense of a notoriously elusive area? The sheer scale of interest in leadership and leadership development, as evident in tonnes of research, publications and websites, creates room for authors who can condense this mass of information into something palatable and meaningful. This was what drove three authors, Dave Ulrich, Norm Smallwood and Kate Sweetman to pen Leadership Code: 5 Rules to Lead By, an attempt to bring together different straying threads of this increasingly important field into focus.

Did they manage to create some order out of this chaos? Did they manage to put their hand on what true leadership is? They have come up with a list of five central qualities for every competent leader.

All of them are nothing but repetition of ideas we have seen elsewhere, rehashed and rearranged in terms of priorities to varying degrees. For example, authors put forward an idea that effective leaders are strategists – they are capable of dreaming up visionary goals, charting a path that leads up to getting there and letting others buy into it by communicating clearly and with passion. Well, this is hardly news, but they manage to make a compelling argument about it, showing not just case studies, but also practical advice.

Authors make clear that being good at creating visions and strategies does not make a full leader. There is also another side to this equation that is necessary – implementation, including the ability to manage it down to the smallest detail, such as delegation or resource allocation. It has to do with understanding accountability and being able to share it convincingly with others.

Their another key capability for leaders is that, through leadership training or otherwise, they need to develop skills of talent management. Organizations rely on input from their human resources, which is why choosing partners for cooperation is so important. It is also about nurturing those with talents, letting them grow in the best possible direction, as well as engaging them in ways other than just financial incentives.

In other words, leadership is about bringing the best out in people, helping them develop their potential and, in this way, developing the potential of an organization, especially in the context of securing its future. Leadership development should sensitize managers and executives to long-term requirements in this area.

Buried among these four skills, there is one which concentrates purely on individuals who are at the helm of organizations. One in five is not strong proportionately, but the quality authors call personal proficiency is actually central to leadership. It has to do with sustainable development of managers and executives at all levels – from physical workout that does not leave them exhausted and feeble under pressure of high-octane lifestyle to spiritual and emotional growth that provides a healthy balance for other engagements.
